10 Strategy Tips for Tile Laying Games Like Carcassonne
· 7 min read
Carcassonne looks like a friendly game about building a pretty map. Under the surface it is a tight fight over followers, tiles and timing. These ten tips work in any game of Carcassonne, and you can practice every one of them in Seizer, a free online tile placement game. If you enjoy Carcassonne, you will feel at home there.
1Your followers are your real currency
You only have a handful of followers, and one stuck in an unfinished city is a follower you cannot use. Early on, favour small cities and short roads that finish in a turn or two. Each time a follower comes home you get another chance to score.
2Farmers win games
Fields score only at the end, 3 points for every finished city they touch. A single farmer in a big field can be worth 15 points or more, which is often the gap between first and second. The catch is that a farmer never comes back, so place one when the field already touches two or three cities, or will soon.
3Do not farm too early
The flip side of tip 2. A farmer on turn three locks a follower for the whole game while the map is still tiny. In most games the best time for your first farmer is the middle of the game, once you can see which fields are going to be crowded with cities.
4Steal cities by joining them
You cannot put a follower in a city someone already holds, but you can start your own city next to it and later connect the two with a tile. When they merge, whoever has more followers inside takes all the points, and a tie means both score in full. Watch for big cities with a single follower in them. They are the best targets.
5Block what you cannot steal
Some tiles are almost impossible to fit. If an opponent has a big city waiting on one shape, placing a tile that makes that gap harder to fill can leave their city unfinished. An unfinished city only scores 1 point per tile at the end instead of 2, and their follower stays stuck all game.
6Monasteries are safe points
A monastery scores 9 when all eight tiles around it are filled, and nobody can steal it. Put one in an open area where tiles will naturally land. Avoid the edge of a crowded corner, where one hole can stay empty until the end.
7Shields double up
City tiles with a shield are worth an extra 2 points when the city finishes. When you are choosing between two ways to grow a city, the one with shields is usually worth the risk.
8Count the tiles that are left
Before you start a big project, ask whether the tile you need is still likely to come. Some shapes are rare. Late in the game, finishing what you have beats starting something new, because an unfinished city scores only half at the end.
9Keep one follower in reserve
The best move of the game often appears out of nowhere: a tile that lets you join a huge city or claim a perfect field. If all your followers are on the board, you watch it happen. Try to keep at least one at home.
10Plan with more than one tile
In the classic game you draw one tile and play it. Seizer also lets you hold 3 tiles in hand and choose. That changes strategy a lot: you can save the perfect tile for a steal, set up two features at once, and plan whole turns ahead. It is the fastest way to train the long term thinking that wins games.
